The History Of Poker
The history of poker, no one knows precisely where poker originated, how it got its name or when it originated. The basic principle of the game is that the most unusual combination of cards is the winning hand. This has been the basis of the game right from inception (894 A.D) when playing cards were invented and played frequently.
Most people think the evolution of the game has been invented among 969 A.D. by the Chinese. It was reported to have started with the Emperor Mu-Tsung when he played “domino cards” with his spouse on a New Year eve.
Poker in German
Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, a German game called “Pochen” and a French game named “Poque” became very popular. Both games originated from the Spanish game called “Primero” which was invented in the 16th century. Primero involved three cards being dealt with each player.
Betting high stakes and bluffing was used to deceive opponents when holding poor ranking cards. Primero later became the mother of poker. Because poker’s mother is the first version that has the same principles of what we call poker today.
In the US
In the United States, the poker game purportedly started in the 19th century in New Orleans. History made us believe its roots were traced from the floating saloons in Mississippi. In 1843, there are already references made to poker in journals and books that were published. The entire history of poker since that period has made the game what it is today, encouraging players to keep up and bet.
In 1970, poker tournaments became popular in Las Vegas after the World Series of Poker began. American casinos have had poker tables and tournaments ever since. During the ’70s, the first poker strategy books became available. The first two of these types of books were “The Book of Tells” by Mike Caro and “Super System” by Doyle Brunson. Las Vegas is still home to the biggest poker events of the year.
These days poker is played by millions of people around the globe, and we have no one but the early inventors for preserving the game in certain parts of the world. The game has become one of the most popular card games in the world as we speak, that can be enjoyed by multiple numbers of players.
The amount of popularity poker had led to a lot of problems including cheating. This eventually led to laws against gambling. The game of poker underwent several changes after the American Civil war and it became more like the poker which is so popular today.
