Online Poker Terms



There are poker forums and sites that provide information about online poker terms, the terms used in the game poker so beware of all the terms used or you may lose the game because of a simple thing like not knowing the terms. These terms are difficult and confusing and can take a lot of time and commitment for a player to learn. However, it is very important to know these terms, as players have to use them continually while participating in a poker game, whether they are professionals or novices.

  • All In – Online Poker Terms

This means the player is betting all his available chips. Typically, you go “all in” when you are running out of chips; yet, they do not want to fold. Thus, a player who goes “all in” has the tendency if winning all the bets up to the last amount he put in.

  • Pre-Flop

This is the first round of “Texas Hold’Em poker” and players are usually dealt with two cards (pocket cards) each.

  • Flop

This is the second round of poker. It occurs when the first three communal cards are dealt face up on the poker table. These cards can be used by every player in the poker room to create the best 5-card hands.

  1. Check

Checking your players. A check is when you bet zero so that you won’t give up interest, but interest remains on the pot.

  • A Call

A call is when you make the same bet as one placed by the player before you. Players do this to keep in the game not forfeit the money.

  1. Button

In a real-life poker game, the button represents the marker. It is usually round, indicating who the dealer is. It is also known as “the dealer button”. In online poker, the button serves the same purpose, but in this case, it is more like a virtual marker.

  • Turn

The turn is the third round where a communal card is dealt face up and that is the turn starting.

  • Bad Beat

You are a bad beat when you tend to have everything working for you at the table, but all of a sudden an expert comes up to beat you.

  • River

The river is the final round of Texas Hold’Em Poker where the fifth communal card is placed face up on the poker table.

  • No Limit

The betting is not limited in games like these. These games are played mostly by professionals.

  • Pot Limit

These types of poker games have limited betting but the limit is set to the current size of the pot, other than being predetermined. As the pot grows, the betting limit grows as well.

  • Fixed Limit

In this sort of poker game, the betting is limited to a predefined amount and usually, players will be able to see the limit in the description of the poker room. An example would be, $10/10 means all bets are limited to $10 in the flop and pre-flop and $10 in the river and turn.

Other terms are used in poker game include drawing dead, muck, loose game, kicker, Fourth Street, discard, and lock up. It is really important for every poker player, good or bad to learn poker terms before playing the game.
